Joy Backstrum, P.T.

Joy was raised in Juneau, Alaska. She graduated from the University of Colorado, Physical Therapy program in 1986. She completed a residency in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy in 2002. Joy specializes in orthopedics, pelvic dysfunction, and women’s health. She is a member of the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association), Women's Health. Joy has advanced training in Women's Health care including; Incontinence, Pelvic Pain, Osteoporosis and Pre-Post Partum musculoskeletal dysfunction. She is active in the local Physical Therapy Chapter, serving as the Vice-President. Joy's interests outside of work include; alpine and nordic skiing, running, hiking and entertaining in her back yard. Joy's husband, Chris, teaches Biology at South Anchorage High School. Joy has 2 kids, who also attend SAHS, both of whom are competive Nordic skiiers.

Katie Piraino, P.T.

Katie graduated from the Middlesex Hospital School of Physiotherapy in London (UK) in 1989. She completed a residency in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy in 2000. Katie specializes in orthopedic physical therapy, spine, headaches, and pre-post partum musculoskeletal dysfunction. She is a member of the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) orthopedic and Women’s Health sections, Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (UK), and American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Therapists. Katie is board certified in the Strain and Counterstrain technique (the first in Alaska).
